Britain’s housing crisis

James and campaigner Kennedy Walker debate solutions to Britain’s housing crisis

It’s not just about affordability as treasury sources say, but as the chancellor announces billions in funding for housing and high-tech industries. It is mass manufacturing of high specification factory based houses, that are needed to build on a deregulated green belt. 300, 000 homes is a creditable ambition but needs to be year on year for the next twenty years, rather than a one-off target.

In order to achieve the volume of houses we need, a new industry of factory based production is required rather than trying to build houses open to the elements. This could improve quality, come with broadband pre-installed, graphene radiators, and solar panels if necessary. The land needs to be deregulated, a lot of planning regulations overturned, and building in many parts of Britain than currently allowed, lowering house prices and delivering genuine affordability rather than the palliatives now offered in compact urban sites.
